Acrylic
Acrylics are water-based but, unlike watercolor, become permanent and fade-proof when dry. Unlike oils, they dry quickly so work can continue with little delay. They can be applied to just about any surface. There are many choices of synthetic additives that can be used for thickening or thinning, as adhesives for textures created from tissue paper, leaves, fabric, sand, foil, etc.
Studying acrylic painting at the San Antonio Art Institute, I loved its versatility. However, one day I prepared a palette with fresh paint, sketched the composition on paper and then discovered that the paint had dried in the hot Texas sun. I left class frustrated and decided it was time to also learn how to paint with watercolor!
