Hand-Made Books
Traditionally, a book is thought to be a container holding thoughts: open the cover; retrieve the contents; close the cover. With e-books, holding and turning tactile pages are not necessary.
Hand-made artists books are different! They become treasured artifacts, enjoyed for their physical dimensions as well as movement through time and space. They offer tactile enjoyment in the textures of paper and cover, in hand-sewn bindings or accordion-fold structures, and in the lifting up or folding out of pages.
Most of my books have been inspired by personal experience. I enjoy changing hues to reflect the passage of time. Creating the books takes time: sometimes needing a week to create a whole book while others need several years between concept and creation.
I studied Book Arts with Linda Lembke, Clair Van Vliet, Hedi Kyle and Paul Johnson; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and Saint Michaels College Summer Book Arts Institute in Vermont. That led to teaching ‘Introduction to Book Arts’ at the Community College of Vermont and co-founding the Book Arts Guild of Vermont.
